What You Need

  • 1–2g decarboxylated cannabis (see decarboxylation guide)
  • 1 cup (240ml) MCT or olive oil
  • Slow cooker or double boiler
  • Fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth
  • Dark glass storage bottle

Slow Cooker Method (Recommended)

  1. Decarb your cannabis first. See the decarboxylation guide. Do not skip this step.
  2. Combine decarbed cannabis and oil in the slow cooker. Stir to combine.
  3. Cook on LOW for 4–6 hours, stirring every 1–2 hours. Keep temperature below 200°F (93°C).
  4. Strain through cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer. Do not squeeze — this adds chlorophyll.
  5. Store in a dark glass bottle in the fridge for up to 2 months.

Dosage Ratios

Standard ratio: 1g cannabis per 1 cup oil for moderate potency. Use 2g per cup for stronger oil. Use the calculator to get exact THC per tablespoon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which oil absorbs THC best?

MCT oil absorbs THC most efficiently due to medium-chain fatty acids. Olive oil is a close second and better for savoury cooking.

Can I cook with cannabis oil at high heat?

Avoid high heat. THC degrades above 300°F (149°C). Use cannabis oil for low-heat cooking, finishing dishes or in dressings.

How long does cannabis oil last?

In a dark glass bottle in the fridge, cannabis oil lasts 2–3 months. Freeze for longer storage up to 6 months.
