THC Dosing Guide for Edibles
Dosing cannabis edibles correctly is the most important safety skill for home cooks. Unlike smoking, edibles take 30–90 minutes to kick in. This guide gives you the formulas, charts and principles to dose confidently.
Why Edible Dosing Is Different
With edibles, THC is absorbed through the digestive system and converted in the liver to 11-hydroxy-THC — a compound that crosses the blood-brain barrier more effectively, producing a stronger, longer-lasting effect than inhaled cannabis.
The golden rule: start with a low dose and wait at least 2 hours before taking more.
Standard Dose Reference
| THC Amount | Experience Level | Expected Effect |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2.5 mg | Microdose / Beginner | Mild relaxation, minimal psychoactivity |
| 2.5–5 mg | Beginner | Light euphoria, good starting dose |
| 5–10 mg | Recreational | Moderate high, standard edible dose |
| 10–20 mg | Experienced | Strong effect, not recommended for beginners |
| 20–50 mg | High tolerance | Very strong — experienced users only |
| 50 mg+ | Medical / very high tolerance | Intense — serious discomfort risk for most |
Recommended starting dose for first-time edible users: 2.5–5 mg THC.
How to Calculate THC Per Serving
Formula: (cannabis weight in grams × THC% × 1000 × 0.70) ÷ number of servings
The 0.70 factor accounts for decarboxylation efficiency (~88%) and infusion efficiency (~80%).
Example: 5g at 20% THC, makes 20 brownies:
(5 × 0.20 × 1000 × 0.70) ÷ 20 = 35 mg THC per brownie
Cut each brownie in half for ~17.5 mg, or quarters for ~8.75 mg.
Onset Times
- Empty stomach: 30–60 minutes onset, 4–6 hour duration
- Full stomach: 60–90 minutes onset, 6–8 hour duration
- THC drinks: Can onset faster (20–45 min) via sublingual absorption
If You Take Too Much
Cannabis overconsumption is not medically dangerous but can be very uncomfortable — anxiety, rapid heart rate, nausea and disorientation. Stay calm, lie down in a safe environment, drink water. The feeling will pass within 2–4 hours.
