Instructions

  1. 1
Sauté onions in cannabis butter and regular butter until soft. Cool.
  2. 2
Mix ground meat with rice, sautéed onions, paprika, thyme, salt and pepper — season the filling well.
  3. 3
Separate sauerkraut leaves individually. Cut out the tough central rib.
  4. 4
Place 2 tbsp (30 ml) filling on each leaf, roll tightly — tuck in sides first, then roll snugly.
  5. 5
Line pot bottom with bacon slices. Layer sarmale tightly side by side.
  6. 6
Pour in diced tomatoes, remaining sauerkraut, and a splash of water. Top with dill sprigs.
  7. 7
Cover and braise for 2 hours at 320°F (160°C) in the oven. Serve with sour cream.

Pro Tips

  • Use cannabis butter when sautéing the onions — it distributes evenly through all the rolls.
  • Sarmale need plenty of time — braising makes them tender and flavors meld together.
  • Sauerkraut head: If unavailable, blanch fresh cabbage in salt water for 5 minutes.
  • Sarmale taste best on the second and third day — traditionally prepared the day before for festive meals.
